Digital ID is coming to Canada, bringing with it a host of questions and even some concerns from privacy advocates.
Statistics indicate that the public is overwhelmingly supportive of Digital ID. Still these initiatives have their critics, many of whom fear government will overreach or abuse. Digital Identification is an extension of current forms of ID that claims to offer more privacy and control over how personal information is shared. Proponents claim that it alleviates some of the risks associated with physical documents such as driver’s licenses, passports or bank cards.

Following the positive feedback received about the ability to conduct right to work checks remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Home Office announced the permanent option of digital checks. However, in its webinar, What Employers Need to Know About Digital Identity, Sterling found that 38% of hiring managers were unsure about the process, 9% believed it would be a challenging process, and 1% indicated that they would prefer traditional screening methods.
Post-poll confirms that a lot of this reticence comes from a lack of understanding around the finer details, rather than a complete reluctance to the move.

The current wars in Yemen, Palestine and Ukraine have sparked an enormous humanitarian appeal. Such circumstances have brought into the foreground the value of implementing innovative technologies such as portable digital identity wallets. This technology is key in helping to ensure that even when displaced from your home and physical documentation, you are never displaced from your identity and ability to seamlessly enter and participate in the global economy.
Just as people turned to cryptocurrency after losing access to material assets, so too could a digital ID wallet help smooth the transition of those entering new countries, many of whom left crucial documentation and personal records behind.
