The DIF Hackathon 2024 has officially come to a close, and what an incredible journey it has been! Over the past month, developers, innovators, and visionaries from around the world came together to tackle challenges in Education, Reusable Identity, and Travel, creating solutions that push the boundaries of decentralized identity technologies.
As proud sponsors of the hackathon, we were thrilled to host two exciting challenges:
Challenge 1: Miko’s Journey to Amsterdam – Reusable Digital Identity for Expats
This challenge focused on designing a Digital Identity Wallet to help Miko, an expat relocating to Amsterdam, navigate the complex process of settling in her new city. The wallet includes a pre-configured to-do list guiding her through key steps, such as obtaining verifiable credentials (VCs) like an employment contract, visa, and proof of registration. The solution must ensure seamless integration of interlinked VCs, maintaining data integrity and enabling processes like opening a bank account and signing a rental agreement. Participants were encouraged to model the wallet’s orchestration of this journey, using features like drafts and interlinked VCs to streamline Miko’s onboarding experience.
Challenge 2: eKYC – Compliance Officer Panel
This challenge addressed the critical role of compliance officers in verifying and approving VCs. Participants were tasked with building a Compliance Officer Panel to process documents submitted by Miko for opening a bank account. The panel should allow officers to review interlinked VCs, approve or reject submissions, and issue new VCs (e.g., bank account information). Key functionalities included the ability to search through received VCs, ensure interlinking before review, and log decisions efficiently. The goal was to showcase how a streamlined compliance workflow could support complex eKYC processes while enhancing user experience and regulatory compliance.
A special congratulations to the winning teams and all participants who shared their ideas and hard work. The $5,000 prize pool we contributed was just a small part of the nearly $69,000 distributed across groundbreaking projects. Each idea brought us one step closer to making digital identities as robust and portable as their physical counterparts.
We are incredibly grateful for the creativity, passion, and commitment shown by the developer community. Your contributions highlight the transformative power of decentralized identity, and we’re proud to have been part of this inspiring event.
